Overall Review

Toyota Etios GD is a sub-10 lakh compact in India, from one of the best automaker in the world. This diesel version of Etios is considered to be one of the most affordable and competitive sedan in the Indian automobile segment. This sedan is powered by a 1.4-litre 8V SOHC diesel engine which delivers a power of 67.1bhp at 3800rpm and is capable of producing a torque of 170Nm at 1800rpm. Not just in terms of power but also in terms of fuel efficiency, the sedan is quite a performer. The mileage which one can expect out of this sedan in the city is close to 20.32kmpl and on highways Toyota Etios GD delivers about 23.59kmpl.

The sedan offers high quality finish and fitments inside and on the outside. Though the car, especially from inside despite of being designed really well, is quite simple but then again it is a product of one of the finest automakers therefore despite the simplicity, there have been no loose ends from Toyota’s side, be it in terms of finishing or performance or any other aspect. The car is a fine piece of work on the design as well as technology front.

The car faces a tough competition from the likes of Maruti Dzire, Ford Classic and the likes. Maruti Dzire works really well because of its brand name. In terms of performance, space, comfort and drive etc. Toyota Etios is not less in any way. Dzire diesel delivers a mileage of 23.4kmpl when driven on highways and Ford Classic delivers about 20kmpl on the other hand. When the cars in present times have very minute points of differentiations then each and every aspect makes a difference like where Maruti is known for its low maintenance and excellent after sale service, Toyota is known for the technologically advanced products which it brings to the markets. Maruti Dzire is one of the most favourite vehicles in the country but at the same time, Etios is one tough nut to crack for the former mentioned sedan. In fact, it wouldn’t be completely incorrect to say that Toyota Etios sedan is a no nonsense car which makes you go “waku-doki.”

Mileage and Fuel Economy

With the 1.4-litre 4-cylinder 8V SOHC diesel engine, Toyota Etios GD produces a torque of 170Nm at 1800rpm and delivers a maximum power of 67.1bhp at 3800rpm. With the powerful engine along with a low kerb weight of 990kgs, the mileage delivered by Toyota Etios GD is about 20.32kmpl when it’s being driven in the city and about 23.59kmpl when running on highways.

Acceleration and Pick up

Toyota has always been known for the sheer technology which they use and this particular vehicle which is in conversation, Toyota Etios GD, is no different. Apart from the technology and refinement in the performance, the sedan also has a design which is done with such finesse. Coming back to the performance centric engine, along with the wonderful mileage which goes as high as 23kmpl, Etios GD can speed up to 163kmph and can touch 100kmph from zilch in about 15.88 seconds.

Appearance

The design of the Toyota Etios from inside as well as outside is very simple but is done with a lot of finesse. The looks of the cabin make one feel that Toyota could have done better in terms of design. The dashboard and speedometer hold a very old design format and is quite boring. The seating however is very comfortable and spacious. The rear seat can easily fit in 3 adults with ease. There is a lot of storage space around the cabin with pockets on the doors, bottle holders etc. The three spoke steering wheel which is electrically powered is quite responsive and the gear knob has chrome treatment.

Coming to the exteriors of Toyota Etios GD, the car isn’t one which will make heads turn yet with the subtle look, the sedan looks good. The aerodynamic structure of the car helps it look a little modish. The front grille looks like a smiling face and the large headlights powered by high intensity lamps add to the looks of the car from the front. The car gets body colored door handles along with very subtle wheel arches. The rear end of the car has a rather boxy feel but is done well with the chrome garnish along with stylish tail lamps. The sedan doesn’t look sporty, it doesn’t look anything over the top, in fact it looks like a simple elegant weekday car which would like to be seen getting out of in their office parking.

Comfort Feature

Being one of the lower variants in the Toyota Etios line-up, Toyoto Etios GD does not flaunt any very high end features but is blessed with all the basics. There is the power steering along with rear and front power windows along with remote trunk opener, remote fuel lid opener and cup holders in the front etc. The seats have lumbar support and are extremely cushiony and very comfortable and very spacious. The Air conditioning is very effective. Along with it being electric power steering, the steering is adjustable and light. The car also has adjustable headlights, power adjustable ORVMs. The car gets power door locks, child safety locks, anti – theft alarm, day/night rear view mirror, halogen headlamps, keyless entry and engine immobilizer etc. which keep the car and passengers riding in it, safe.

Dimensions

The length of Toyota Etios is 4265mm, width is 1695mm, height is 1510mm and the wheelbase of the sedan is 2550mm. The figures clearly depict that the stance of the car is quite large and the sedan is sure to demand an acknowledgment when it will be seen in a crowd. The ground clearance of the car is 170mm which is very good looking at the conditions of the roads in India.

Engine

The engine of Toyota Etios GD is the power 1.4-litre 68bhp 8V SOHC diesel engine which delivers a power of 67.1bhp at 3800rpm and produces a maximum torque which is equal to 170Nm at 1800rpm. The drive train comes mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The engine does make some noise but is excellent when it comes to performance. The vehicle has almost no turbo lag and one does not need to downshift often. The mileage which this engine is capable of goes up to 23.59kmpl on highways and is 20.32kmpl in the city.

Wheels

Toyota Etios GD stands on 175/65 R14 tubeless tyres which gives the car a good drip with the ground and help it run smoothly.

Suspension

Toyota Etios GD has McPherson Strut front suspension system and Torsion Beam rear suspension which helps make the car a good drive even on the most rugged roads.

Handling and Control

McPherson Strut front suspension system and Torsion Beam rear suspension along with Ventilated disc front brakes and drum rear brakes make the Toyota Etios GD quite a good ride on the Indian roads. The steering wheel is light and adjustable but finding the perfect spot for the driving position is a little task which might take some time. However, the handling and control of the sedan in an overall term is quite decent.
