Overall Review

Toyota Motors is one of the most prestigious automobile companies, not only in India but also throughout the globe. Their new addition on the Indian roads is the Toyota Etios, a good step towards the entry-level sedan segment. Keeping in mind the needs of the Indian customers, the sedan has been made to accommodate maximum space and good comfort features. The Toyota Etios comes in both variants of petrol and diesel with a highly efficient engine. The car surely lacks flamboyant styling, but has some style elements that would be appreciated by the customers.  The car is equipped with a powerful engine, and comes with a total of eleven variants in the market. The upgraded Etios sedan model is now a rather wholesome product, and proves to be a more compelling family car proposition. Toyota has promised to provide world-class technology and quality, under a very affordable price with its Etios series. The safety features included are of world class with no compromises.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

The Toyota Etios has a fuel tank of 45L and provides a mileage of 13.5kmpl on the city roads and 16.78kmpl on the highways with petrol engine. Speaking of the diesel variant, it has more impressive mileage figures; it provides 20.32kmpl on the city roads and 23.32kmpl on the highways. Both the petrol and diesel versions of Toyota Etios meet the Bharat Stage IV emission norms. The electronic throttle control is quite useful in contributing to higher fuel efficiency.

Colors

The sedan comes in a choice of six very appealing colors including Symphony Silver, Harmony Beige, Serene Bluish Silver, Vermilion Red, Celestial Black and Plain White.

Acceleration and Pick up

When it comes to speed, the Toyota Etios is in league with its competitors.  The car can do a maximum speed of 165kmph, and roar from a standstill to 100kmph in less than 12seconds. The acceleration by both the engines are good and is no denying that it is indeed quick, especially the petrol variant.

Appearance

The outer looks of the sedan are not that exciting which could be seen with the previous models of Toyota. The designing tends to be rather conservative rather than futuristic; it may be mainly because it is an entry-level sedan. The top model of Etios features 12-spoke alloy wheels, body colored outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs), door handles and front fog lamps, while the lower end models are deprived of these features. The front face of the car looks like a smiling face of human with dimples at cheeks, thanks to the stylish headlamps. While at the rear, full size rain wiper and rear hood are present. The Etios rear flowing c-pillar, rounded end and the three dimensional combination lamps and bonnet are some other features that are alluring.

Comfort Feature

In the department of comfort, the Toyota Etios has no match. The car has a spacious passenger cabin with seating capacity for five adults. The seats are ergonomically designed with integrated headrests for full body support and rest. The back seat is much wider and comfortable in all the variants, as enough room for passenger's knees, thigh and back is ensured. This sedan features the newly developed air conditioning system with good heating system wherein, the clean air filter provides a wonderful ride. The power steering of the car comes with the tilt function that decreases down the pain of taking sharp cuts on narrow roads. The car comes with dark grey two-tone premium interiors. Front cabin lights, power outlet (12V) digital tripmeter are some of the other features present in the car. Now over the entertainment package, except the base model all other variants are featured with 2 DIN 1 CD MP3 AM/FM w/USB audio systems (w/ remote) and 4 speakers. The top variants are also presented with the Aux-in & Bluetooth features.

Dimensions

The Toyota Etios has an overall length of 4265mm, width of 1695mm, and an overall height of 1510mm. The sedan is very spacious and provides a lavish seating for five adults. This premium sedan provides a boot space of 595L. The kerb weight of the car increases from 935kg to 1020kg from base model to the top model. The ground clearance of the car is about 174mm.

Engine

As mentioned earlier, there are two different variants of Toyota Etios sedan, one comes with 1.5L petrol engine that is 1496cc 16V DOHC engine, and another is the 1.4L diesel SOHC engine. The petrol engine is capable of producing a maximum power of 88.7BHP at 5600RPM and a maximum torque of 132Nm at 3000RPM. Whereas, the 1.4L diesel engine generates a maximum power of 67BHP at the rate of 3800RPM with 170Nm at the rate of 1800-2400RPM torque. The modestly powerful engines are coupled with the 5-speed manual transmission gearbox that produces very slick and easy transmission. The engine is very responsive at low revolutions and takes up the slack well. The fuel supply system in the petrol variant is the electronic fuel injection and, the common rail direct injection type in the diesel variant.

Wheels

In this sedan, 185/60 R15 size of tubeless tyres are mounted on the 15inches wheels. The alloy wheels are only present in the top end variant. The wheelbase of the car enables a 4.9m sharp turning radius.

Suspension

Toyota Etios boasts of the MacPherson Strut suspension system at the front and Torsion beam suspension at the rear.

Handling and Control

The Toyota Etios is loaded with ventilated disc brakes at the front and conventional drum brakes at the rear part that adds to its safety. The wheelbase of the car is bigger which provides a firm hold on the road. The power steering of the sedan is also the plus point of the car that is very responsive, and offers excellent maneuverability. Also, the anti locking braking system and the electronic brake distribution ensure safety to the passengers.

Pros

The Toyota Etios comes in both petrol and diesel variants. The sedan offers a large legroom with big headroom. The car has many safety and comfort features.

Cons

The sedan’s exterior look is not so much eye alluring and does not look that attractive. The dashboard is too outdated with centrally fitted meters.
